MOVING METAL: FORGING FOR JEWELERS

Come explore the majestic techniques of forging and add dynamic expression and fluid movement to your jewelry designs in a fun, focused and encouraging environment. Jewelry scale forging is about "finesse not force". In this 3-day workshop, students will learn all aspects of forging- how metal moves, the world of hammers and important proper body mechanics. We will work with wire and practice creating planes, transitions and movement utilizing radiating and directional forging techniques, and how to create tapers with both a hammer and a wire rolling mill. Jewelry forms can be created entirely with a forged base structure or with connected forged elements. Also, forged elements can be added to fabricated designs. Students can decide their workshop focus. There will be lots of hands-on practice and demos. This workshop is limited to 10 students. See the Supply List at www.spruillarts.org for further information regarding the materials needed. PREREQUISITE: Three completed Beginning Jewelry and Metalsmithing classes or by permission of the instructor.
